We give these Vancouver garden stores two green thumbs up

Except for perhaps Victoria, there’s no better place in Canada than the Lower Mainland to give your green thumb a workout all year round. Our temperate climate means that flowers, plants and food can grow in all seasons. Lucky for us there are such excellent shops to point us in the right direction.

Figaro's Garden

1
1896 Victoria Dr, Vancouver, BC V5N 4K2

Walking into this lovely, family-run garden store tucked away on the corner of Victoria Drive and 3rd is like entering an oasis. Greenery, of course, abounds, as does the knowledge contained within the minds of the dedicated staff, all of whom are either Master Gardeners or have studied horticulture extensively. Pick out the plants or flowers you desire, or rely on their expertise for everything from arranging a hanging planter to identifying a garden pest. Classes and events are always on, too.

Art Knapp Urban Garden

2
1401 Hornby St, Vancouver, BC V6Z 1W8

Part clothing and gift shop, part lifestyle store, part nursery and all gorgeous, Art Knapp carries a selection of both indoor and outdoor plants — many exotic and large-scale species — as well as a stunning selection of orchids and magical, on-trend air plants. They offer workshops on everything from seasonal décor with plants to harvesting bees and their extensive garden accessories for sale means that your garden will look as good as you do, dressed as you are in their VERO MODA line.

GARDENWORKS North Shore

3
95 Philip Avenue, North Vancouver, BC V7P 1B5

This major garden centre in North Van (they have two other locations in Burnaby as well) prides itself on having having "everything you need to make your garden work." This, of course, includes seeds, plants, soil, fertilizers and tools, but it also includes ready, expert advice from their all-star staff and informative monthly newsletter. Tips and advice on how to tend your outdoor space throughout the year are extremely helpful and of course the centre itself will equip you with the practical tools you need. Check out their frequent in-store events for kids and adults alike.

Earthrise Garden Store

4
2954 W 4th Ave, Vancouver, BC V6K 1R4

This magical shop on West 4th in Kitsilano has been thriving since 1987. The aesthetic is out of a JRR Tolkein fairytale, with natural, wooden and stone accessories for the garden complementing wrought iron trellises and lanterns to illuminate the garden path. They also sell fresh cut flowers and create stunning, romantic arrangements in addition to their stock of potted plants.

Hunters Garden Centre

5
2560 Broadway W, Vancouver, BC V6K 2G1

With both a full-scale nursery and a flower shop, David Hunter Garden Centre at 2560 West Broadway is one of the oldest garden shops in Vancouver. Now managed by third-generation Hunters, the centre offers a wide variety of indoor and outdoor plants, both tropical and native, as well as seasonal arrangements, custom planters and a garden consultation service. Their florist can manage stunning arrangements for everyday, special occasions and even weddings.

Southlands Nursery

6
6550 Balaclava St, Vancouver, BC V6N 1L9

From its stunning location in bucolic Southlands to gorgeous wrought-iron framed greenhouses out of an English countryside, this nursery and retail shop transports you out of the city and into a plant fantasy land. Browse their large outdoor area for hydrangeas, Japanese maple or boxwood or head inside for tropical plants and flowers, tastefully arranged in those greenhouses. Their retail store has a curated selection of lovely goods for the home, like candles, soaps, decorative bowls and larger pieces for the garden itself.
