Penny Pan was a new mother looking to own a business that would allow her to have a work-life balance. She found a quaint little restaurant in the basement of the historic Royal Bank Tower on rue Saint Jacques. “My husband had his own job, so I needed to find something where I could still take care of my baby,” says Penny. In 2013, she bought La Porte Royale, a breakfast and lunch restaurant. Its location in the heart of Old Montreal was ideal for her lifestyle. “My schedule is based on 5 days [a week]. I don’t need to work weekends or evenings. [This allows me to] have time to spend with my family. [Plus], the business has 24-hour security, so I thought this is the one.”
La Porte Royale is Penny’s first foray into business. Having worked in fast food restaurants before, she had some knowledge of what it takes to run a successful restaurant. One of the main things is treating your customer right. “You can tell a lot by the customer’s attitude and body language,” she says. “I can tell they appreciate me, and they treat me well.”
